GIANT Burger

At first glace, you’d think this GIANT burger was the result of meticulous planning and an extra large appetite.  But you’d be wrong.  This GIANT burger (yes, it has to be in all caps) was the result of too much food and not enough voracious friends.  After having made 3 lbs of burger meat at a weekend barbecue, I still had about 1- 1/2 pounds left.  And what should you do when you have that much meat left?  Make a GIANT burger, of course!

Unfortunately, I didn’t have a giant bun to cradle this patty with, although we did throw around of the idea of using two medium sized pizzas as buns.  Great idea, but terrible for your arteries…

Hanbagu (Japanese Burger Dish)

Hambagu

When I first heard about Hanbagu, I couldn’t help but think that the Japanese had chosen poorly for once.  They took cars and gave us Toyota.  They took baseball and we got Ichrio and Matsui.  And they took beef, and we got Kobe.  Let’s be honest, they’re very good at beating America at its own game (at least until Joey Chestnut came along).  But to supplant the great American hamburger – that’s just too audacious, isn’t it?

Fortunately, this dish doesn’t really complete with our great American classic.  It doesn’t sit on a bun, but on a bed of rice.  It’s not topped with ketchup & mustard, but instead with a tangy sauce (a Worcestershire & ketchup-based BBQ sauce).   Vegetables can sit on the side, or be cooked directly into the sauce.

The Hanbagu is not better or worse than the American burger – it’s just different.  But man, is it delicious!

Make a REAL burger

Hamburger Patty
Yes, I will say it, all pre-made frozen patties are not real burgers.  Thin, fatty, uninteresting… these patties are best used for serving a party of 40.  And, on the health side, if you’ve ever read Fast Food Nation, Omnivore’s Dilemma, or are aware of the outbreaks of Hemmorhagic E.Coli (EHEC, for those medically inclined), then you should care what part of the cow your meat really comes from.

On a side note, I read that Costco/ Kirkland Signature is pretty much the only seller who still does quality and safety testing upon receipt of the product from the manufacturer.  In other words, their patties are the most safe.

Anyway, if you’ve got the time and the willingness to massage ground beef, then this recipe will enhance your burger experience.  There are a lot of variations you can take with this. For instance, I’ve folded in a block of mozzarella cheese, and have made the burgers from pork or turkey instead of beef.
